It's Like Spring!

Howdy folks!

I hope you all had a good break, because I sure did!

Let's break it down then! In the morning we had a lengthy discussion on similes and metaphors (something that's on the CSTs):

We also quickly discussed compound sentences, but we'll get more into that tomorrow:)

We then went over our vocab for the week (it deals with baseball), had a zippy talk on fact and opinion, took our spelling pre-test (all the words follow the VCV pattern like pilot or parent), and then utilized the Dreambox and Lexia programs on our laptops.Oh, by the way, you can find the vocab and spelling here.

For math, we began our topic on charts and graphs with a lesson on surveys, and why surveys are used:

After math, we went over how to write a response-to-literature essay, as we will be having a district writing assessment next week that could deal with this type of writing:

After lunch we had some R.T.S. and then we continued our discussion on the Yurok people as well as learn about the Modoc people.
  •  Did you know that the Yurok were the few tribes in California that cared about wealth? They collected shells as a sign of wealth. They also gained wealth and power by controlling salmon pools, groves of trees, or parts of beaches! Interesting!
Yurok woman flaunting her wealth with clothing and jewelry made from shells.
  •  Did you know that the Modoc people lived on a plateau? They lived in pithouses during the winter and in wickiups during the summer. Males would hang out in sweathouses before hunting in order to cleanse their spirits and soul.
The Modoc Plateau.
The Modoc pithouse. It was partly underground.

An example of a wickiup, the type of dwelling the Modoc would live in during the summer.

We also reviewed our notes on the Chumash and the Yokuts people in preparation for the test on Friday.
  • Did you know that the Chumash lived in the area that is now Santa Barbara? They also lived on the surrounding islands close to Santa Barbara too!

  • Did you know the Yokuts' main source of food were acorns? They would turn acorns into flour and make a thick hot stew called weewish! It's sort of like oatmeal! Yum!

That's about it folks. Cheers!
