Today was the Monday blues, as we had another barrage of district assessments to take! It was long, it was hard, but we managed to complete it! Again, I told the students that most of the questions are about math concepts they haven't learned yet, and to give it their best even if the questions seem daunting. I also explained that they'll get a chance to show the benchmark who's boss when they take it again a couple more times in the school year, and that the benchmark they took today will assist me in finding the best way to support them in their education.
We were able to squeeze in some reading today, and what a story it was that the students got to read! We read part of Finding the Titanic, immersing ourselves in the quest, with Dr. Robert Ballard, to search for the famous shipwreck. We also got a glimpse of what it was like to be on the ship (from the point of view of then-twelve-year-old Ruth Becker) when it hit the iceberg and started to sink! Before delving into the story, we front-loaded vocabulary that was pertinent to understanding the non-fiction piece we were about to read.
| Ahh, it's sinking! Make sure you click on the picture and on any other links on today's post to get the full Titanic effect! |
| Not enough lifeboats! Yikes! |
After reading, we began a Brace Map in order to hone in on the details of each chapter of the story:
We're going to try and complete more of the brace map tomorrow!
Tuesday will be another assessment day, only this time, it'll be English/Language Arts. Then that'll be it for assessments for a long while! Yay!
By the way, if your child happens to misplace his/her spelling list, I have it on my classroom page.
Also, Back-to-School Night is tomorrow! I hope you can all make it!
That's about it for today! Have a nice evening and cheers!
