Monday, Monday!

Howdy there folks! This is the first post of the year! Whoo hoo! So let's have a breakdown of what we did today:

In English Language Arts, we continued to analyze story structure by reading Akiak. Students utilized a sequencing chart to summarize the beginning, middle, and end of the story

We also focused on words that have multiple meanings. Students created sentences for each meaning of a certain word.

In Math, we focused on comparing numbers and placing them in order from least to greatest. The tricky ones were comparing numbers that had zeroes in them! For example,

Place these numbers in order from least to greatest

10, 300     10,030    10,003

What a doozie! Some strategies I showed the students were to break down the numbers in expanded form,

10,000+ 300
10,000+30
 10,000+3

If they used this strategy, it could help them see which number was the least, which number was the greatest, and then put them in order. Yay!

I also showed the students to place the numbers in a place value chart; by aligning the digit of each of the numbers up, students could then compare those numbers and place them in order.

Students also had a chance to do a free write; the topic was: What would you do if you woke up one day and had wings? They had a lot of fun with that. Hopefully we'll get a chance to share a few of their stories. Near the end of the day, students got to interview one another, and we will be turning their interviews into paragraphs sometime this week. Well that just about does it. Hope your eyes didn't glaze over from reading this! Cheers!
