We started the day out doing a free writ about our heritage, background, and cultures. Here are a few student samples:
Pretty good stuff! Afterwards we got down with the spelling pre-test. we then delved into the story, By the Shores of Silver Lake, created a vocab tree map, focused on picking out important details and used think-pair-share to generate questions about the story. We're only halfway through the story, and it's going to get more exciting form here on out!
After recess, we worked on math concepts, learning about using pictures to solve word problems, and reviewing estimating sums and differences. Since the latter was very confusing for students (and myself) the first time around, we decided on this strategy when they don't tell you which place to round it to:
After lunch, we did Read to Self, finished up chapter 4 of our Social Studies unit, and then looked into expository writing using Step Up to Writing. We created Circle Maps to brainstorm our favorite foods, and we began to write our outlines:
